Michèle Mouton
A line portrait of one of the defining drivers of the early Group B years.
Michèle Mouton became the leading figure of Audi’s rally program at the moment the quattro began reshaping the sport. Her victories in the early 1980s demonstrated the advantage of all-wheel drive and helped establish the new direction rally engineering would follow. She's still the only female winner of a WRC event.
In 1982 she came within a single rally of the World Championship, finishing runner-up in one of the most competitive seasons the sport had seen.
Mouton’s performances did more than win rallies. They confirmed that the balance of power in the championship had shifted.
This piece recognizes a driver whose determination and precision helped define the era.
