Lamborghini Countach
The Lamborghini Countach arrived in the early 1970s and reset expectations for what a supercar could look like. It did not evolve from what came before. It broke from it completely. The Countach became the visual and mechanical template for high performance cars that followed.
The origin of the Countach begins with Lamborghini’s need to move beyond the Miura. The Miura had established the company as a serious performance brand, but it still carried elements of traditional design. Lamborghini wanted something more extreme. The project, known internally as LP112, was led by chief engineer Paolo Stanzani and designer Marcello Gandini at Bertone.
Gandini’s design defined the car. The Countach introduced sharp lines, flat surfaces, and an aggressive wedge shape. The roofline is low, the nose is pointed, and the rear rises with purpose. The scissor doors became a signature feature. They were not added for style alone. The wide sills and tight cabin made conventional doors impractical. The vertical opening solved that problem while creating a distinct identity.
The body evolved over its production life, but the core design remained intact. Early LP400 models are clean and minimal, with narrow tires and smooth panels. Later versions added wider arches, larger wheels, and the optional rear wing. These changes increased presence, but they also added weight and complexity. Even with these updates, the Countach never lost its sharp, angular form.
The chassis used a tubular spaceframe, providing strength while keeping weight under control. Aluminum body panels were mounted over the frame. The layout placed the engine longitudinally behind the driver, with the gearbox positioned ahead of it. Power was sent forward through the transmission and then back to the rear wheels. This unusual configuration helped balance the car while keeping the drivetrain compact.
At the heart of the Countach is Lamborghini’s V12 engine. Early LP400 models used a 4.0 liter version producing around 375 horsepower. Over time, displacement increased. The LP5000 introduced a 4.8 liter engine, and the 5000 Quattrovalvole expanded to 5.2 liters with four valves per cylinder. Output climbed to over 450 horsepower in later cars. The engine is naturally aspirated, with strong throttle response and a distinct sound that defines the driving experience.
The driving position reflects the car’s extreme design. The cabin is tight, with limited visibility. The windshield is shallow, and rear visibility is minimal. Drivers often rely on the open door to reverse the car. The controls require effort. The clutch is heavy, the steering is unassisted, and the gearbox demands precision. This is not a casual driving experience. It requires focus at every step.
Inside, the Countach mixes simple structure with touches of luxury. Leather covers the seats and key surfaces, but space is limited. The dashboard is angled toward the driver, with clear gauges and minimal distraction. Over time, interiors became more refined, but the core layout remained focused on the act of driving.
What sets the Countach apart is its presence. It does not rely on subtlety. The shape, the stance, and the sound all demand attention. It became a defining image of the supercar era, appearing in films, posters, and magazines throughout the 1980s. For many, it represented the idea of speed and success.
The Countach also influenced how performance cars were designed. The wedge shape, wide stance, and dramatic proportions became common themes. Other manufacturers responded with their own interpretations, but the Countach established the direction.
