Ferrari F40
The Ferrari F40 arrived in 1987 with a clear purpose. It marked 40 years of Ferrari, and it would be the last car approved by Enzo Ferrari himself. That alone gives it weight, but the F40 did not rely on legacy. It set out to be the fastest, most direct road car Ferrari had ever built.
The origin of the F40 starts with the 288 GTO and its evolution, the 288 GTO Evoluzione. Ferrari had developed that car for Group B racing, but when the series was shut down in 1986, the engineering team was left with a machine that had no category. Instead of shelving it, Ferrari turned that work into something else. The idea was simple. Build a road car that carried race car DNA without compromise.
The design came from Pininfarina, led by Leonardo Fioravanti. It followed function over form at every step. The shape is sharp, low, and purposeful. The large rear wing is not decoration. It generates real downforce at speed. The front splitter, flat underbody, and venting all serve airflow. Every surface has a job. Even the sliding plastic windows reflect the intent to save weight.
The body itself used materials that were rare in road cars at the time. Carbon fiber, Kevlar, and Nomex were used throughout the structure. The result was a dry weight of around 2,400 pounds. That number matters. Ferrari did not chase luxury or comfort. They chased power-to-weight.
The engine sits at the center of the F40’s identity. It is a 2.9 liter twin turbocharged V8, known internally as the F120A. It produces 471 horsepower and 426 lb ft of torque. Those numbers were extreme for the late 1980s, but the way the power arrives is what defines the car. Below boost, the engine feels restrained. Then the turbos come alive, and the car surges forward with force that still feels aggressive today.
Ferrari paired that engine with a five speed manual gearbox. There is no traction control, no stability system, and no driver aids. The chassis is stiff, the steering is unassisted, and the brakes demand effort. The F40 requires attention. It rewards precision, but it punishes mistakes.
Inside, the car is stripped down. There are no carpets. The door panels are bare composite. The seats are thin and fixed. You get a simple set of gauges and a gated shifter. That is it. Ferrari removed anything that did not make the car faster or lighter. Air conditioning was optional. A radio was optional. Many cars left the factory without both.
What makes the F40 stand apart is how honest it is. Ferrari did not try to balance comfort with performance. They made a decision and followed it through. The car delivers speed in a raw form. At the time of its release, it could reach 201 mph. That made it the first production car to break the 200 mph barrier. More important, it did it without filters.
The F40 also represents a shift in how supercars were built. It showed that lightweight construction and forced induction could define performance. Competitors took note. Porsche responded with the 959, but from a different angle. Ferrari stayed focused on simplicity and aggression.
Enzo Ferrari’s involvement adds another layer. He approved the project late in his life. Many see the F40 as his final statement on what a Ferrari should be. There is no excess. There is no compromise. It is built around the driver and the experience.
Over time, the F40 has become one of the most respected cars in Ferrari’s history. Not because it was the most advanced. Not because it was the most refined. It earned that place because it delivers something clear and direct. You feel the engine, the boost, the chassis, and the road without interference.
